It's been awhile since DVAA organized a camping event on the Cherry Springs State Park astronomy field, but we are about to remedy that situation!
Important information about the astronomy field can be found at this link: Info on Stargazing at Cherry Springs State Park.
We will find space together on the field (see the map below and look for the blue DVAA banner) so we can share the views. We will try to get a spot towards the back of the field (along Nova Avenue, or behind it) to be protected from intruding headlights from outside the field.
On the spacious astronomy field there are pedastals with electricity (for astronomy equipment use only), restrooms with flush toilets, picnic tables and grills. In order to preserve darkness on the field, no white lights, and no car travel, are permitted after sundown. Showers are available at nearby Lyman Run State Park.
Tents and RVs are welcome to set up right on the astronomy field. Upon arrival, camping permits must be purchased from the park at $25 per night per campsite.
If you are not a camper, there are lodgings not too far away at the Frosty Hollow Bed and Breakfast (7.5 miles from the field) or at the Millstream Inn in Coudersport (17 miles). Be aware though that cars cannot be driven on the astronomy field after sunset, but if you are not staying on the field all night, you can park on the loop road just outside the astronomy field.
Meals will be whatever you bring with you, or you can visit restaurants in nearby Galeton or Coudersport. If there is interest we may organize a group meal.
Of course the trip will be weather-dependent; watch this space and
groups.io for Go/No to announcements, as the dates may change depending upon weather. Think of the dates as a
window, and most folks will time their travel to the best weather.
