The October 2021 meeting of the Delaware Valley Amateur Astronomers will be held Friday, October 15. The meeting will be conducted online starting at 7:30 PM (opening up at 7 PM for informal discussions). Our invited speaker will be John Conrad, NASA/JPL Solar System Ambassador, on "Lucy: The First Mission to the Trojan Asteroids."
"Boldly going where neither man nor robot has gone before, NASA will launch the Lucy spacecraft this October on a 12-year visit to unique bodies left over from the Solar System’s formation. The special role of gravity – ruler of the universe - will be evident: - first in the Lagrangian Sun-Jupiter ‘trapping’ of these asteroid swarms (the Trojans) - and then in the shifting orbits and trajectories enabling this visit to 8 different asteroids.
Finally, the nature of these varied targets and what we expect to learn will be covered."
