Despite the problems you cite, it's still quite a brilliant shot. How do you overcome the focusing...ie - how on earth do you know what to focus to?
Here's a little animation I made of the ISS as it passed within a degree of the Moon yesterday afternoon.

A second image depicts a still image of the ISS in a single frame.

This event tested the limits of my camera and was not captured at full resolution.

I used my Canon EOS REBEL XS, Celestron Edge HD 8, 0.7x focal reducer, CGX mount and BackyardEOS in movie mode (to collect the data). Ideally, I would have preferred to use continuous burst mode on my Camera to catch several quick successive full resolution images but I was limited by my camera which can only burst 3 FPS. That wouldn't have been fast enough since the entire event was over in a fraction of a second. Instead, I was able to capture data at about 18 FPS in movie mode but with reduced resolution.
